KARNAK CONSERVATION – KHONSU TEMPLE

Capacity: Engineering and Architecture

DESCRIPTION

Karnak Temple, located on the east bank in Luxor, and is one of the largest ancient complexes in Egypt. It was continuously built upon starting in the Middle Kingdom through the Roman Period. Within the complex is a temple dedicated to the god Khonsu. An ancient village surrounded the temple at one time and the local villagers used the temple for religious and commercial activities. The temple is typical in its layout.

Conservation efforts began in the main court focusing on the west wall and columns. Old cement patches throughout the temple were removed and replaced with lime mortar. The temple contained twelve side chapels many that were beyond repair. The remaining chapels suffered from excessive soot and dirt from previous use from the villagers. This covered any trace of paintings beneath. Dr. Khadija Adam developed and implemented a program to conserve, restore and clean the chapel walls and ceiling and patch any flooring that was missing. This was meant to halt the deterioration and to attract more tourists. The results are stunning with the original color brining the temple back to life. Tourist agencies routinely make a stop with their tour groups now.
