EXPERIENCE

MUT TEMPLE SITE IMPROVEMENT AND JOB CREATION PROJECT

Capacity: Management

DESCRIPTION

The site contains a Roman era temple dedicated to the goddess Isis. The site included an exposed decomposing enclosure wall, a proto pylon (original entrance), old mud brick guard shack and a missing stairway to the temple. The temple itself contained soot and dirt covered painted scenes that were in bad need of conservation and cleaning. The temple was also infested with bats.

Improvements included humane removal of the bat infestation, capping the enclosure wall with new mud brick to protect the old, patching and restoring the remnants of the proto pylon, removal of the old mud brick guard shack and constructing a new small building with a WC for tourists, room for the guards and the ministry inspectors, new entrance to the temple, new parking area and walkway, new signage and complete conservation of the Isis Temple. The program included conservation training and temporary jobs to lessen the impact of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution and subsequent drop in tourism.
