EXPERIENCE
DRA ABU EL NAGA SITE IMPROVEMENT AND JOB CREATION
Capacity: Engineering and Architecture
DESCRIPTION
Dra Abu el Naga is located on the west bank in Luxor. In 2006 and 2007, the villagers were relocated and the housing structures were demolished. The debris from the activity was left in place. A program to hire local individuals hit by the loss of tourism to clean up and remove the debris was designed and implemented by Dr. John Shearman and a conservation plan for pharaonic tombs and improved access was designed and implemented by Dr. Khadija Adam to attract future tourists. The temporary jobs were for approximately two years that provided time for the tourists to return to Egypt. The conservation program opened up additional tombs for visitors to the site.
Site improvements included new shaded mastabas for visitors and improved access to newly opened tombs in upper areas. Approximately 1,800 locals were temporarily employed for the project duration. The project was immensely successful being on time and under budget.
